Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
We have been serving Champaign since 1982.
What is your primary product or service?
Our primary service is a special type of massage therapy called Precision Neuromuscular Therapy. This type of massage/soft-tissue therapy is best for relief of specific muscular discomfort. Most of the people who come to see us come with some specific area that is bothering them. After a few sessions (typically 3-4), the initial problem is improved. At that point, the client may decide to visit us periodically for preventative maintenance at a schedule they decide upon.
While many people come to BodyWork Associates for specific needs, we also see many people who are just tired and need to feel revived and rejuvenated. We encourage this population to see us as they wish.
Precision Neuromuscular Therapy shines when applied to specific problems, general massage is great for relaxation. The best thing about BodyWork Associates is that the therapist who is doing general massage has the advanced anatomy skills to solve specific issues if needed. It is the best of both worlds.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Many years ago(1977), I was teaching exercise/Yoga classes and was looking for a way to truly impact healthcare. I thought about being a physical therapist and explored that avenue.
What I came to realize is that the most under-served population is people with muscular discomfort. If you break your leg, our health-care system in unequaled. If your leg just hurts, there are few options for you.
I have designed the work to address exactly that, muscular discomfort. The kind of issues that affect people on a daily basis. These people tough it out; they are still going to work, caring for children or aging parents, serving the community, but they do that with the added weight of pain that seems unceasing. In many cases, that discomfort is muscular in nature and that is what we do best.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
BodyWork Associates (BWA), the clinic, is just part of my total business. Connected with BWA is NMT MidWest, Inc. which is the national training center for Precision Neuromuscular Therapy (PNMT). People come to Champaign from all over the USA to study PNMT. NMT MidWest teaches about 80 seminars annually all over the country.
Additionally, I have a research institute that studies massage therapy. Again, in how many massage clinics will you be treated by a therapist involved in clinical research? This is something we are very proud of and every therapist in the clinic is now or will be involved with.
Essentially, BWA is right in between two divergent venues. We are not a spa. . . we do not do anything but massage therapy. We are not really in the typical personal service arena.
At the same time, we are not a medical clinic. We do not accept insurance, people pay out of pocket. We very often work with physicians, but you do not need a prescription.
While there are disadvantages to being in between two worlds, we find it to be a great advantage. People who come to see us are treated by serious professionals and treated with the care they would expect at any excellent personal service establishment.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have four locations presently with plans for a fifth.
What type of payments do you accept?
WE accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and personal checks.
Which areas do you service?
We regularly have people coming from as far as two hours in any direction from Champaign.
